On May 30, Dick Rowland, a 19 year old black shoe shiner, entered a downtown office building elevator operated by Sarah Page, a white attendant. The two teens touched. Page said he assaulted her, but Rowland later said he had put his hand on her arm. By the time the elevator doors reopened, Page was screaming and Rowland was running for his life. The rumor was spread further by a Tulsa Tribune article the next day claiming that Rowland had tried to tear off Pages clothes. Accusations of impropriety toward white women were common against black men during the period and often led to executions. Rowland was arrested and locked in the local courthouse, where blacks feared he might be dragged out and lynched for his alleged crime. A small phalanx of Greenwood men, some of them armed, drove downtown on the evening of May 31 to ensure that Rowland was safe. They found a crowd of hundreds of white men, many of them also armed, outside the courthouse. Eventually a black World War I veteran and a white man got into a scuffle over the veterans right to wield a weapon. A gunshot rang out, but it might as well have been a battle cry.

Tolerance is especially necessary when a pet owner is allergic to his or her companion animal. Studies show that approximately 15% of the population is allergic to dogs or cats. An estimated one third of Americans who are allergic to cats about two million people live with at least one cat in their household anyway. In a study of 341 adults who were allergic to cats or dogs and had been advised by their physicians to give up their pets, only one out of five did. Whats more, 122 of them obtained another pet after a previous one had died. Its clear the benefits of pet companionship outweigh the drawbacks of pet allergies for many owners. Living comfortably with a companion animal despite being allergic to him requires a good understanding of the allergic condition and an adherence to a few rules. All cats and dogs are allergenic allergy causing to people who are allergic to animals. Cats tend to be more allergenic than dogs for allergic people, although some people are more sensitive to dogs than cats. Contrary to popular belief, there are no non allergenic breeds of dogs or cats; even hairless breeds may be highly allergenic. Dogs with soft, constantly growing hairthe Poodle or the Bichon Frise, for examplemay be less irritating to some individuals, although this may be because they are bathed and groomed more frequently.

The most recent research, published this spring by Aletha C. Huston and John C. Wright of the Center for Research on the Influences of Television on Children, hardly even attempts to disguise its bias. Although they had not completed "in depth analyses" of their data, the authors write, "there were practical, sentimental, academic, political, and personal reasons to complete the first report" of their findings in time for Sesame Street's 25th anniversary. In fact, Huston and Wright, long time advocates of educational television for children and previous CTW consultants, are "pleased" that their preliminary report can make the greatest claims yet for the show. Unlike most positive findings so far, which have merely asserted a correlation between watching Sesame Street and emerging literacy, Huston and Wright went so far as to state that watching the show "appears to play a positive causal role in development of readiness for school. "But if it's the show that causes school readiness, how does one explain that kids who watch Sesame Street frequently also spend more time looking at books, at "art, music, paper and pencil games, . cultural events," as Huston and Wright also note?Somebody who cares about the children's future is taking them to the circus, buying them art supplies, and turning PBS on at the appropriate timeand it's not Big Bird. Oddly, in a 1991 article, one not commissioned by CTW, these same authors seem to have understood that kids who watch educational TV come from different sorts of homes than kids watching Animaniacs; they "have parents who also provide them with stimulating toys and activities, and who are attentive and affectionate to them.
